At the institutions listed, scholars may have the opportunity to utilize Problem Based Learning and visit the anatomy lab to gain an understanding of the basics of medical school education. Scholars may also learn about various healthcare careers including Pharmacy, Dentistry and Optometry, depending on their site visit.

At the clinical institutions listed, scholars will have the opportunity to learn about Eastern Medicine (this includes acupuncture, holistic medicine, herbal medicine & complementary therapies like massage), gain exposure to training on basic life support, how to start and run an IV, and how computerized patients are used in medical training.

Dr. Diana Farmer, Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at University of California at San Francisco’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Farmer is the world’s first female fetal surgeon.
Dr. Alice Chen, Medical Director of General Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Chen’s primary focus is on issues of health care access, particularly how poverty, cultural differences and policy intersect to create barriers to care. Her work has focused on improving access to quality healthcare for limited English health consumers.
Dr. Hobart Harris, Chief of General Surgery at University of California at San Francisco’s Medical Center. Dr. Harris is an expert in treating surgical infections and diseases of the pancreas and biliary system. Dr. Harris earned undergraduate, medical and public health degrees at Harvard University.
