MEDICAL SCHOOLS:

At each of the medical schools listed below, scholars will participate in
hands-on activities while learning about medical education:

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Take in a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park, the crown jewel of downtown Houston.
  • Spend a weekend afternoon at the beautiful Moody Gardens and visit the Rainforest and Aquarium Pyramids.
  • The Forum closes with an incredible gala in the Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

CLINICAL INSTITUTIONS:

Scholars have a wide variety of choices for their clinical visits within the world’s largest medical center. This summer visits include:

  • Wyle Laboratories and National Space Biomedical Research Institute at Johnson Space Center
  • TIRR Memorial Hermann, recognized for 20 years as one of America’s “Best Rehabilitation Hospitals”
  • The University of Texas Surgical and Clinical Skills Center, for the
    practice of hands-on-learning simulations at the Surgical and Clinical Skills Center
  • The University of Texas Medical Branch, John Sealy Hospital
  • The Women’s Hospital of Texas
  • Harris County Hospital District System
  • Texas Orthopedic Hospital
  • Shriners Hospital for Children
  • The Texas Heart Institute
  • Prairie View A&M College of Nursing

SPEAKERS:

Speakers who have participated in past Houston Forums include:

Dr. Mark  Adickes, Orthopedic surgeon and Super Bowl champion as an offensive lineman in the National Football League.  He is a Harvard University Medical School graduate who is currently Co-Medical Director and Orthopedic Surgeon at the Memorial Hermann Hospital-Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance.

Dr. Scott Parazynski, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Medical Officer at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, Texas. In 1992 Dr. Parazynski was selected to join NASA's Astronaut Corps, flying 5 Space Shuttle Missions and conducting 7 spacewalks. He has a particular expertise in human adaptation to stressful environments, and in 2009 he became the first astronaut to stand on top of the world when he climbed Mt. Everest.

Dr. Hal K. Doerr and Dr. Victor Hurst IV, scientists with the Houston Center for Advanced Patient Care and Wyle Laboratories.  They will share the secrets to practicing medicine in space.

Dr. Wolf of the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will walk scholars step-by-step through real crime scene investigations to learn the details of forensic medicine and debunk what is seen on CSI.
